Our people

The Board of INFINZ is indicative of the breadth of skill and experience within the membership of the Institute. It currently represents every aspect of the capital and financial markets of New Zealand. The Board is elected for a term of two years to ensure continuity of governance.

The INFINZ Secretariat has two professional staff: Jim McElwain (Executive Director) and Iona Gibbs (Administration Manager).

ANZ New Zealand

David leads ANZ’s Institutional division in New Zealand. The Institutional business manages client relationships and provides specialised markets, transactional and financing products and solutions to customers. Prior to joining ANZ in 2005, he held a number of global banking roles for Deutsche Bank in Australia and New Zealand.

David has more than 23 years’ experience in the finance and banking sector in senior management, advisory, structuring, underwriting and markets roles.

In addition to his membership of INFINZ, David is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand (College of Chartered Accountants) and the New Zealand Institute of Management.

General Manager, Global Transactional Banking

ASB Institutional

David is the General Manager of Global Transactional Banking at ASB Institutional. He leads a team consisting of Transactional Banking, Trade Finance & Financial Institutions Group

His previous role was as Head of the Commonwealth Bank Global Markets team based in Auckland. David led the team for four years after working in the Sydney room where he provided structured derivative risk management solutions to the top 70 clients in NSW.

David has established dealing desks for both NAB in the NSW property sector and with Bank of Scotland in London. David started in the markets in 1995 after completing the Bank of Scotland graduate program in London as an interest swaps trader.

David has a BA Honours Degree from Kings College, University of London and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland.



Mike Faville

Mike Faville, LLB, B.Com, BE (Hons)

Head of Capital Markets,

Wholesale Banking, Bank of New Zealand

Mike Faville is Head of Debt Capital Markets at Bank of New Zealand. He has led and worked on a number of significant capital markets transactions in that team, including issues for Auckland Council, Meridian Energy, Fonterra, HSBC, Rabobank, and US Private Placement transactions for Mighty River Power and Transpower. Mike also has responsibility for running BNZ’s domestic bond issues, including the first Covered Bond by an Australasian bank, and BNZ’s innovative Tier 1 hybrid issues by BNZ Income Securities, the first PIE compliant securities issued in New Zealand. Before joining BNZ Mike worked as a lawyer for eight years in Auckland and London.

Deepak K Gupta, BCA, MBA, FCFIP

Deepak joined the INFINZ Board in May 2002 as one of the founding directors of INFINZ. Deepak was a Committee member of the New Zealand Society of Investment Analysts, one of the two member bodies that merged to form INFINZ, from 1989 to 2002 and was Chairman for a period.

As Executive Director of Trustees Executors, Deepak is responsible for the strategic, operational and financial management of the Company.

Deepak is also director of NZX listed Tourism Holdings Limited, director of ASX listed Over Fifties Group and director of various private companies. He has previously held various senior management positions in financial services companies in New Zealand and directorships of a number of private companies in various industries. Deepak has an extensive background of nearly 25 years in institutional funds management and private equity investment.

Philip King heads Fletcher Building’s investor and media relations functions.

Prior to joining Fletcher Building in 2008 Philip spent 13 years with Telecom New Zealand in a variety of roles including corporate affairs, investor relations, treasury and corporate finance, and internet TV.

Following his graduation from Victoria University with a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration, Philip joined National Australia Bank, and worked there for eight years in corporate and commercial banking in New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

Philip is a Chartered Accountant, a non-executive director of the NBR New Zealand Opera, and was a previously a director of the Australasian Investor Relations Association.



Paul Kelway

Air New Zealand Ltd

As Treasurer Paul is responsible for the Management of the financial risks of the Company from fuel, foreign exchange, interest rates and liquidity. He also buys the fuel. He has worked for Air New Zealand since 1991.

Paul has an MPhil in Economics and MSc in Mathematics from the University of Auckland. He worked in the NZ Government Treasury as an economist before shifting to the banking sector and becoming involved in markets.


Bruce McKay

Bruce is also an executive with the Centre for Financial Services & Markets at the College of Business, Massey University, and a director of Saffron Capital Ltd.

Bruce has a wide range of experience in financial markets and has been an equity analyst, head of research, and undertaken numerous roles and projects in investment banking and corporate finance. He has worked in New Zealand, Australia and Germany..

Bruce has been on the Board of INFINZ since its inception in 2002 and has played an active role as a Chair of the Advocacy Committee and was formerly executive editor of the INFINZ Journal.


Paul Mowbray

Head of Portfolio Completion

New Zealand Super Fund

Paul joined NZ Super in 2009 when they started a treasury operation and in-sourced cash, equity derivatives and currency management. Paul manages the Treasury team, now called Portfolio Completion and sits on the Fund’s investment committee.

Paul has over 24 years experience in the New Zealand financial markets as a Director at Deutsche Bank, Head of Capital Markets at Bankers Trust and at the Rural Bank of New Zealand. Paul has been an INFINZ member since 1994 and has a BCA from the Victoria University of Wellington in Economics and Accounting.


Anthony Quirk

Anthony has over 26 year’s experience in the investment industry. He is Managing Director at Milford Asset Management and joined the company in 2007 after previous senior roles in the funds management industry.

Anthony is a Fellow of the Institute of Finance Professionals New Zealand and has previously been Chairman of the Asset Management Advisory Board of the New Zealand Exchange, a member of the Financial Reporting Standards Board of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and Deputy Chairman of the New Zealand Society of Investment Analysts.

David is an accredited NZX Advisor, and is Chairman of the NZX Debt Advisory Board. David has over 25 years experience in the financial markets both domestically and offshore and now specialises in the origination, distribution and dealing in New Zealand debt products.


Maree Webster

Maree Webster

Finance and Legal Consultant

Maree is an experienced finance professional, currently working at Auckland Council directing its pan-Council efficiency and effectiveness programme. She is has worked as a CFO and Commercial Director for listed companies including Carter Holt Harvey. Prior to that she practiced at Russell McVeagh as a Commercial Tax Lawyer. She holds an honours degree in Law.


Geoff Zame

Head of Institutional Equities
Craigs Investment Partners

Geoff joined the Craigs Investment Partners Equities Research team in Auckland, as an analyst(s) in July 2007, he was appointed Head of Institutional Research in April 2009 and Head of Institutional Equities in November 2010.

Geoff’s current focus is on the telecommunications, transport and media sectors. Prior to joining Craigs, Geoff spent the previous six years with Telecom Corporation NZ, the majority of this time as Investor Relations Manager and latterly as Finance Manager for Telecom’s Business Retail division.

Geoff’s previous work experience included five years based in London as Finance Manager for Cater Allen (a wholesale moneybroker, subsidiary of Abbey National), and prior to that with Deloitte & Touche in Wellington, qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1997.

Geoff holds a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in accounting and economics) from the University of Otago and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute of Australia



Jim McElwain

INFINZ Executive Director


Jim McElwain joined INFINZ 16th January 2012 following a long career in the public and private sectors. Jim has undertaken a variety of advisory roles in Treasury, Southpac Corporation, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young and, more recently, Taylor Duignan Barry Limited and his own business, McElwain Consulting Limited.

Jim is passionate about wholesale financial and capital markets and is excited about the opportunities ahead for INFINZ. Jim also has a strong personal interest in advocacy in the finance industry. In addition to being a Certified Securities Analyst Professional (CSAP), member of INFINZ and a former Board representative, he holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration (Hons) from Victoria University.
