New Zealand Super Fund - Manager, Direct Investment

The Manager, Direct Investment is a senior role within NZ Super Fund's direct investments team, which makes large, active investments into private assets. Reporting into the Head of Direct Investment, this position leads portfolio managers and analysts to develop and implement investment strategy across a range of sectors, taking a lead role in sourcing deal flow and managing exits. A selection of current New Zealand investments includes Datacom, Kiwi Group Holdings, Fidelity Life and the Asia Pacific Healthcare Group (APHG).

Key Responsibilities

This role is highly autonomous, combining responsibility for an existing portfolio of investments with market development and sourcing new opportunities. It is a true leadership role in the sense that it must support team members who lead many of the component parts, providing strategic oversight and market connectivity to enable their work. The role works with peers in direct investment who provide research and analysis on private market risks and themes, as well as sector-specific advice relating to real assets. A key responsibility is synthesising this information to inform sourcing activity, so as to generate deal flow that fits the desired risk profile of the Fund.

There is an external component to the role in respect of fostering relationships with co-investors and peer funds internationally, as well as manager evaluation and monitoring for assets that have external contracts.

Your Background

As an underlying requirement, candidates for this role should bring a deep and broad base of technical skills and experience in both M&A and private market investing. Beyond this, the ability to lead, motivate and work with a team of experts is crucial and could come from a leadership role within a professional services business or corporate development team. Candidates should be comfortable working at a senior level, especially with external advisors, Boards and company management teams.
