Investment Analyst – Maori business (12 month fixed term)

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), Te Taurapa Tuhono, is New Zealand's international business development agency, we help companies grow bigger, better, faster, for the good of New Zealand.

The Māori Investment team focuses on companies and new operations that create potential direct economic impact outcomes such as new jobs in regional Aotearoa. Our team analyses and supports the development and acceleration of commercial investment opportunities that capitalise on New Zealand's sustainable competitive advantage.

This fixed term role within the Investment Solutions team will involve supporting the Māori Investment team in their operations, originating opportunities and building the investment capability of New Zealand stakeholders to accelerate companies and projects to an investment ready state, with the aim of attracting domestic capital or Foreign Direct Investment. You'll provide in-depth capital and financial knowledge, analysis and advice across various opportunities.

In terms of te ao Māori, this means driving:

  • Hinonga - Māori better-utilising their assets to generate income and meaningful employment in Aotearoa
  • Matauranga - informed Māori investors growing diversified portfolios
  • Rangapu - Māori partnering for investment success
  • Titohu - Awesome Māori investment opportunities showcased to the world

He aha tāu e mahi ana | What you'll be doing:

We are looking for a highly capable, flexible and motivated person to support the origination and preparation of Māori investment propositions through comprehensive market and business analysis. You will be working across the entire life cycle of investment projects, from supporting the development of projects in conjunction with the Māori Investment Managers, analysing investment propositions alongside Māori organisations (Iwi commercial entities; significant Māori Incorporations and Lands Trusts; Māori commercial partnerships; Māori companies, etc) at the concept stage, shaping the proposition for market, then connecting with the right investors.

Advice will range from high level value proposition and market evaluation through to financial analysis, business models, operational mechanics and governance for specific opportunities; all to create high-quality investment propositions and attract investors.

Relationships will be as diverse as the projects, with a wide range of stakeholders including; Founders, Directors and Management of Māori commercial entities, governors of Iwi, Māori Incorporations and Land Trusts, local and international investor groups, Professional intermediaries (e.g. Investment Banks, Advisory Firms, Commercial Banks), and relevant government agencies.

Ko ngāmea ka hiahiatia e koe kia angitūtehaere | What you'll need to be successful:

The ideal candidate is an investment focused professional, skilled in financial analysis with in-depth knowledge of the Māori commercial sector, preferably with a corporate finance background and strong project management skills. This role will connect you across the domestic and global capital raising ecosystem and offers the potential to develop wider career prospects either within NZ or offshore. There's a heap of exciting things to get amongst.

This role will suit someone with a strong business and personal connection to Aotearoa.

Key Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Te Reo Māori and connection to the Māori commercial ecosystem
  • Deal execution, origination or investor relations background
  • Ability to manage stakeholder relationships
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strategic project deal analysis / financial skills
  • Flexibility in thinking and strategic mindset
