Legal Counsel - Consumer

The Commerce Commission is New Zealand's competition, consumer and regulatory agency. Our mission is to make New Zealanders better off by ensuring our markets work well, and consumers and businesses are confident participants in those markets.

The Competition and Consumer Branch aims to ensure markets are more competitive and consumers' interests are protected. The Branch helps businesses to understand their obligations and consumers to know their rights.

Our Consumer Legal team is looking for a Legal Counsel to join their busy and productive team. This is a full time, permanent position based in either our Wellington or Auckland office.

The role

Join a team of talented lawyers who will guide and mentor you as you apply consumer law principles and undertake Fair Trading Act litigation.

Your day-to-day role is likely to involve:

  • gathering, researching and analysing complex information
  • opinion writing
  • presenting information either in writing or verbally
  • working with internal and external stakeholders
  • prioritising between multiple pieces of work.

What you will have

We are looking for an intelligent, confident individual with excellent communication skills, a strong law degree and who holds (or is eligible to hold) a NZ practising certificate.

You will also have:

  • strong skills in file administration and the organisation of information
  • proven experience in assessing information and formulating advice within a legal framework
  • confident and clear communication skills both written and verbal
  • sound judgement
  • the ability to successfully collaborate with others.
