Adviser, Regulatory Services

A great place to work. With great work to do.

Ours is a meaningful and impactful role, as a kaitiaki (caretakers) of the financial services in Aotearoa. We oversee a market that does right by everyone, ensuring better outcomes for all New Zealanders. Our role as a kaitiaki is brought to life by our values; Look to the Horizon, Help the Team Work, Make the Calls and Open Hearts, Open Minds.

Te Tūranga | The Role

Are you a problem-solver who thrives on variety, challenge and knowing that your work is making an important difference every day?

We're looking for an Adviser to join our super high-performing, good humoured and passionate Regulatory Services team in Auckland or Wellington. This is a dynamic frontline role where no two days are the same - perfect for you if you’re at your best being curious in a fast‑paced, investigative environment.

You’ll act on intelligence, triage information, and carry out enquiries into complaints about individuals and businesses. Much of your work will involve the unlicensed population, giving you the chance to dig in, explore, connect the dots, and either help prevent harm before it happens or reduce further harm. Your work will directly support better outcomes for consumers and help New Zealanders to have confidence in our financial sector.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Responding promptly and accurately to misconduct reports and public enquiries in a manner that builds trust and confidence in financial markets.
  • Leading enquiries and assessment into misconduct reports based on identification and assessment of the likely harms and taking account of the FMA’s Regulatory priorities.
  • Assisting market participants in their understanding of their obligations and FMA expectations.
  • Reviewing websites and other information sources for potential conduct issues.
  • Assisting in the preparation of communications to entities and market regarding surveillance findings.
  • Conducting proactive surveillance of the perimeter to identify harm.
  • Undertaking and delivering projects as required.
  • Maintaining high quality records and contributing to intelligence gathering, team projects, and continuous improvement initiatives.

He kōrero mōu | About You

This role suits someone who enjoys conversations that require curiosity, clarity, strong listening skills and diplomacy. You’re naturally inquisitive - the kind of person who asks the next question and can spot what doesn’t quite add up.

You’ll likely bring:

  • Strong critical thinking ability - able to move beyond surface details and make sound, well-reasoned decisions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, tailored to different audiences.
  • An appetite for learning; experience with legislation is helpful but not essential.
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office and CRM systems.
  • A collaborative, team first mindset with initiative, resilience and a sense of humour.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships across a range of stakeholders.

We’re keen to hear from people with experience in regulatory environments or the financial services sector - especially those interested in fintech, emerging technologies and financial products.

You’re not expected to meet every requirement. At FMA, a growth mindset sits at the heart of how we learn and work - if this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
