The Treasury has recently established a dedicated Climate Change team which will lead our advice to Government as it makes its key strategic decisions on emissions reduction and climate adaptation over the next 12-18 months. These roles provide a fantastic opportunity to lead influential advice that will shape New Zealand's long-term response to climate change from the centre of government.

Multiple roles are available, at Senior Analyst or Analyst level, both permanent and fixed term.

The Climate Change team's work programme includes:

  • leading a work programme to supporting the effective funding and financing of the climate transition
  • providing strong economic advice on how best to achieve emissions reduction targets, in response to the Climate Change Commission's advice to Government
  • understanding the long-term needs of the country in adapting to the impacts of climate change

The role of successful candidate will be to lead important streams of advice across the team work programme, with an opportunity to shape the Treasury's strategic policy positions from the ground up as we support the Minister of Finance. You'll get to lead work that will draw on the skills of a range of other teams in the Treasury, and manage key relationships with colleagues in other agencies such as the Ministry for the Environment.

What you'll bring:

  • Aptitude for critical thinking, and confidence to apply analytical framework in creative ways to new problems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex issues succinctly and with influence, to a range of audiences
  • Experience working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Comfort working at pace and dealing with ambiguity, and an ability to identify and manage risks

We pride ourselves on the quality of our staff and understand the importance of fostering a working environment where excellence is recognised and where staff are encouraged to develop their own talents and potential. The Treasury values diversity and inclusion and encourages a positive work/life balance with flexible work arrangements and a range of health and wellbeing initiatives.
