Media Relations Adviser

How will you help?

This newly created Media Relations Adviser role reports to the Senior Manager External Communications. The person in this role will liaise with media to help communicate what we do at Westpac.

You will interpret complex information from across the bank and make it available to media and other external stakeholders, communicating quickly, accurately and concisely in written and verbal formats.

It's therefore crucial that you can produce well-written copy that is appropriate to the audience and effectively distils complex issues. You'll also provide a point of contact for initial media enquiries and identify appropriate Westpac NZ spokespeople as required.

This role isn't purely reactive though - you'll get to work across the business to identify opportunities for proactive media and social media coverage, contributing to growing the profile of Westpac NZ.

What you'll need to succeed:

  • At least 3 years' experience in journalism or a media-facing communications role.
  • Business acumen and strategic thinking ability.
  • Understanding of a large corporate environment, preferably from within the financial services industry.
  • Good understanding of the New Zealand media environment and strong relationships with a variety of media.
  • Advanced writing skills, and ability to understand complex financial, legal issues and to present them in an appropriate way to media.
  • Good working knowledge of social media.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively operate and influence across a large organisation, including in conversation with senior employees.
  • Superior verbal communication and interpersonal skills, and an ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively prioritise.
