Session 6. Tips and tricks - panel discussion with NZ’s leading executives.

Louise Tong

Director, Infratil

Louise is Infratil's Director, Sustainability, Risk & Funding. She is responsible for developing and delivering Infratil's sustainability strategy and has oversight of the Company's portfolio risk, including Treasury risk management and funding.

Before joining Infratil, Louise worked at BNZ establishing a Sustainable Finance capability in the Corporate & Institutional Bank division. Working across a broad range of sectors, Louise led on a number of sustainability-linked and green funding transactions including the establishment of the New Zealand Government’s inaugural Green Bond programme.

Having previously held various roles over eight years at Contact Energy, Louise gained insights into the key role the energy sector plays in decarbonisation. As GM Financial Services, Louise was responsible for funding, liquidity, financial market risks, technical accounting and tax. In 2017, Louise finalised Contact’s NZ$1.8 billion green borrowing programme – the first green certification completed by a New Zealand issuer and also the largest-ever single green certification by the Climate Bonds Initiative. In late 2019, Contact entered into a $50 million Sustainability Linked Loan with Westpac, one of the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Prior to joining Contact, Louise worked for 20 years in the banking industry in New Zealand, principally in corporate finance and financial markets.

Louise also spent seven years contributing to the broader finance sector through her role on the board of INFINZ, a member-based industry body for professionals working and participating in New Zealand's wholesale finance and capital markets. In 2018 she moved into the role of INFINZ Chair.

Louise has also held a position as an independent member of Auckland Council’s Treasury Management Steering Group, overseeing the treasury function whose responsibilities include the management of the Council’s circa $8 billion debt portfolio and green finance programme.

Louise holds a degree with Honours in Civil Engineering from the University of Canterbury and a Masters in Applied Finance from Victoria University of Wellington.
