Job Description
As we grow our proprietary trading and market making capability across NZ and Australian markets, we're looking for a trader who wants real ownership of risk and P&L from day one, on a desk with the balance sheet, technology, and market access to back it.
We are looking for an experienced trader to join our proprietary trading and market making team. You'll be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and executing trading opportunities across equities, ETFs, futures, and other financial markets, while managing risk within firm mandates.
Ideally, you'll have 2–5 years of relevant trading experience, though we remain flexible on this for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and evaluate trading opportunities across equities, ETFs, futures, and other listed instruments
- Provide two-way markets and manage inventory risk as part of the firm's market making obligations
- Execute proprietary trading strategies, including arbitrage, relative value, and directional positions
- Monitor index rebalances, corporate actions, and market structure events for tradeable flow
- Manage intraday and overnight risk within position limits and firm risk parameters
- Collaborate with sales, research, and compliance teams on execution and regulatory matters
- Maintain strong understanding of NZX/ASX market rules, including facilitation, proprietary trading, and segregation requirements
- Contribute to the ongoing development of trading tools, models, and process improvements
Desired Skills and Experience
- 2–5 years' experience as a market maker, proprietary trader, or in a similar liquidity provision/trading role (flexible for exceptional candidates outside this range)
- Strong understanding of equity, ETF, and futures market mechanics
- Demonstrated ability to identify and act on trading opportunities under time pressure
- Sound risk management discipline and P&L accountability
- Familiarity with NZX and/or ASX market structure and participant rules is highly regarded
- Comfortable working with trading systems (IRESS) and quantitative tools
- Strong programming skills in Python, R, C++ or similar are highly regarded but not essential
- High attention to detail and strong ethical standards, given regulatory and conflicts-of-interest obligations in a prop trading environment
- Relevant tertiary qualification in finance, economics, mathematics, or a related field preferred
What you will get
- Direct exposure to proprietary capital and market making flow across NZ and Australian markets
- A collaborative, high-performance trading floor environment
- Access to institutional-grade data and infrastructure
- Career progression within a leading NZ investment bank
