NZ RegCo Surveillance Analyst
About the Role
We’re looking for a Surveillance Analyst who will play a key role in maintaining the integrity and transparency of New Zealand's financial markets. Working at the heart of market activity, you will monitor real-time trading, analyse market behaviour, and investigate potential instances of market misconduct. You will collaborate closely with market participants, compliance teams, and regulators to resolve trading enquiries, support investigations, and ensure compliance with NZX market rules and the Financial Markets Conduct Act. This is an exciting opportunity for a curious, analytical, and detail-oriented professional to develop deep capital markets expertise while contributing to the fair and orderly operation of New Zealand's capital markets.
About You

The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in capital markets, be comfortable interpreting complex trading data, and possess the curiosity and professional scepticism needed to identify potential market misconduct. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will regularly engage with market participants, compliance teams, and regulators, explaining complex issues clearly and building effective working relationships. You will also be highly organised, able to work independently, and committed to delivering accurate, timely, and well-reasoned outcomes.
Key Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Monitor real-time trading activity and conduct post-trade reviews to identify unusual market behaviour, potential market misconduct, and breaches of NZX rules and the Financial Markets Conduct Act.
- Investigate trading enquiries and market conduct issues, gathering information, analysing data, and preparing referrals to regulators where required.
- Act as a key point of contact for market participants, assisting with trading-related queries, trade facilitation, dealer setup, cancellations, and block trades.
- Liaise with brokers, compliance teams, regulators, and internal stakeholders to support investigations and ensure market integrity.
- Analyse complex trading data to identify trends, patterns, and potential compliance concerns across cash and derivatives markets.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of surveillance activities, investigations, and regulatory referrals.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of surveillance processes, systems, and reporting practices.
- Build strong working relationships across NZ RegCo, Market Operations, Participant Compliance, and external market participants to support the effective operation of New Zealand's capital markets.
Minimum Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- An interest in capital markets, financial services, market regulation, or trading environments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify patterns and trends within complex data sets.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate, high-quality work under pressure.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex information clearly and professionally.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Confidence building relationships and interacting with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement, and investigate issues thoroughly and objectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and the ability to learn new systems and technologies.
- Previous experience in financial markets, compliance, risk, regulation, surveillance, audit, investigations, or a related analytical role would be advantageous but is not essential.
